Gozo is a small island right across the water from Malta in the Mediterranean. To reach it we flew to Malta, took one of the bus shuttle services to the port of Cirkewwa after which we took the Gozo ferry to the island. The ferry whilst visiting (2010) was nearly 4 euros per passenger and about 13 euros per car plus the driver

For anyone who is used to Spain or France with all the most recent facilities then Gozo is probably not for you considering that it feels that the island is about 10 years behind these countries. Not a bad thing for anyone who is in need of a quiet relaxing getaway. You will never find any nightlife as you might find in mainland Malta we were not looking but you find areas similar to Ramla Bay Beach and Marsalform should you be trying to find something a touch more amazing. We did have occasion to stay at one of the hotels in Gozo which seemed appealing enough I unluckily forgot the name of it since we had been traumatised by cockroaches at our very first holiday resort.

You will definitely need an automobile (they drive on the exact same side as the UK) if you are staying on Gozo unless you are in to riding on buses. The buses are actually collectibles from the 50s and are highly decorated.

We hired a villa in Gozo, near the village of Xaghra which was quiet, pretty much like the rest of the island apart from the capital Victoria. As the island is small it is comparatively easy to drive out to one of the towns in the evening to get a meal. You will realize that the food is predominantly Italian so pasta as well as pizza are on most menus. We did come across a great little square in Xaghra which had a number of high quality restaurants that served fresh fish as well as other meat dishes. The food was costly here but Xlendi was great to visit if you had had an ample amount of pizza.

There is quite a lot to visit on Gozo with a number of bays such as Xlendi which is a small tourist resort on the south west coast. Gozo weather promises warm sea breezes and full on sunshine.

The Citadel in Victoria is really worth a visit. Gozo being predominantly catholic consists of churches that are lavishly decorated and many of the churches are lit at night. There are some interesting museums to visit as well some displaying the huge wealth of the Catholic Church in solid silver.

For those who have some spare cash, the two excursions that I would suggest are the Seaplane that will take you on a scenic flight around the islands and drop you off in Malta for the day. Be prepared to jostle for a window seat so that you can see the spectacular coast line. The plane flies fairly low so you can see a lot of details.

The second excursion is to hire a boat for the day. We paid the extra and had the boat to ourselves which is great as the captain will take you where you wish to go, we were provided with coffee as well as afternoon tea and cooked fresh lunch of fish that has been caught that morning. We stopped off at a number of bays and swam with the fish. This was a magical experience. The captain told us to leap in the water with our snorkels and then he gave food to the fish. We had hundreds of fish all swimming around us rather like a huge aquarium.
